Can Rabbits Eat Basil?

YES, Basil is an excellent nutritious herb and leafy green for rabbits. 

Basil can be good for rabbits as long as it is fed in moderation. It is great for providing certain nutrients.

Rabbits can get many health benefits from basil, but there is a potential health risk to rabbits if we overfeed them.

Some rabbits will like to eat fresh basil leaves. Most of the time, rabbits don’t like to eat basil because of its strong smell.

First, you can offer them a few Basil to check whether they like it or not.

Always wash them before feeding them to the rabbits. Pesticides and chemicals can be harmful to rabbits if we don’t wash them before feeding them.

Risk of overfeeding basil to rabbits.

  • Gastrointestinal Stasis – Overfeeding basil to your rabbits could lead to GI stasis, which is caused by the lack of fiber in your rabbit’s diet.
  • Diarrhea – Diarrhea is also possible when rabbit owners overfeed large amounts of basil to their rabbits too fast.
  • Uneaten cecotropes – Soft uneaten cecotropes are also possible when rabbits are eating large amounts of basil instead of hay. This could lead to softer cecotropes due to the lack of fiber.

Basil is a good herbal plant for rabbits.  But you should offer only a small amount in your rabbit’s daily diet. Always keep the moderation.
